Frequently Asked Questions about MDLL Hit-A-Thon

When does my team particiapte?

Check out the detailed schedule. Please plan to arrive 15-30 minutes before your team's start time and assemble in the dugout with your managers and coaches.

What happens on each turn?

A, AA, AAA, Majors and Intermedite will use the pitching machine, operated by their manager or coach.

Softball will be coach-pitch this year.

T-ball teams will use a tee.

Each player gets 10 swings (not 10 pitches). Each miss or foul is counted as half a swing.

If there are less than 6 hits after 10 swings, the player can use a tee for extra hits:

  • T ball players will continue using the tee for 5 additional swings
  • Single A players get 5 additional swings off the tee
  • AA, AAA and Softball players get 3 additional swings off the tee
  • Majors and Intermediate do not get extra swings off a tee

We'll record the distances for each player. The 6 longest hits are totaled for the player's final score (please note this part won't be completed until a couple days after hit-a-thon).

Do you need any help at the event?

Yes please! We would appreciate having a few parents in the field during your team's action, to help note the distance of each ball after it sails, bounces and rolls into the field. We can explain when you get there. We'd also appreciate a parent in the dugout to help make sure each player is ready for their turn.

Where is Hit-a-Thon and where should I park?

Hit-a-Thon events will take place using both Parklawn Lower and Parklawn Upper. Please check the detailed schedule for your assigned field and time. Please park at Parklawn Elementary for access to both the Lower and Upper field.

What should we bring?

Coaches and managers, please bring helmets, bats and balls for your players. Families, if your player uses their own helmet or bat, you may bring those. Helmets are required. Please have your player in uniform if possible.

What is our fundraising goal?

Our goal is to raise $18,000, working together across the league. The more players who participate, the better for MDLL and the more fun we all have! The teams who win the group prizes usually have every single player participating.

How can my relatives, friends and coworkers support hit-a-thon?

MDLL partners with Do Jiggy to provide a website for secure payments. Each player has their own fundraising page. Supporers will find an option to pledge based on distance, or pledge a flat amount. Supporters can pledge with credit card or pay by check.

Should supports pledge a flat donation or a per-foot donation?

Either way is great, and appreciated. Many sponsors find it easiest to provide a flat donation. Other sponsors will pledge a certain amount per foot. T-Ball players usually hit 400-600 feet. Major leaguers hit 800-1500 feet.

How do I get the word out to raise more money easily?

Share your child's pledge page! Find your player in the list and start sharing! You can edit it or leave it as it is, and send the link in email or post it on social media.

When does fundraising close?

Fundraising for the 2019 Hit-a-Thon will close on June 8, 2019.

Can my player hit if we haven't raised funds?

Yes, of course. We want all of our players to join in the fun. Ever dollar helps, though, so we hope you'll think about who might be able to support your player in this way.

How are the funds used?

The registration fees alone do not cover everything necessary or everything we dream of for our teams’ experiences here. With this fundraiser, we can do more. MDLL’s biggest operating costs are the fields and equipment. Each field permit with the County has an associated fee? And the more fields we need and the more we use, the more we need to be able to afford. Plus, field maintenance is crucial. We are glad to partner with the County but during the season, field upkeep and any supplies needed for field upkeep are MDLL’s responsibility. Each year, the league also purchases equipment that gets worn out, or equipment to meet growing needs for quantities, or to meet new safety standards. Support during the 2018 Hit-a-Thon prepared us for the big increase in player sign-ups this spring! And, we’d like to be able to do more to ease the burden on families.

Is this for t-ball too?

This is for all levels - including t ball! Big or small, experienced or new, please come out and watch your player swing for the fences!

What if it rains?

No!

No, really, what if it rains?

We built in rain dates for this year's hit-a-thon. If you are scheduled for May 4, the rain date is May 18. If you are scheduled for May 5, the rain date is May 19. If you are scheduled for May 6, the rain date is May 20.
